Behind The Drinks
Independence Special: What would they drink here, to "be a free people in our country"?
This time of year brings longing for the good old Land of Israel. The smell of the orchards, the green trees and the mournful Hebrew songs being played, flood you with nostalgia, and thoughts of what was here then, seven and a half decades ago.
It's no wonder that as lovers of legends and myths, we established the abode of Spicehouse on the foundations of Kessit Coffee, and as such - in honor of the 74th birthday of the State of Israel, we concocted festive flavors of independence, which will enhance the traditional viewing of fireworks and the celebratory flight, and will serve as a masterful sign of honor for those who wave Those on duty at the barbecue :)
But before we had a spicehouse, before the boutique wineries, breweries and desert distilleries arose - what did you drink here besides spritz and cut? Over what drink did Ben-Gurion, Moshe Sharet and Rivkind celebrate the declaration of independence in Rothschild 16? And what kind of toast was raised in the parliament to 'Kasit' (which after several incarnations became a spicehouse) on that festive day in H. Bayer, when even the mythical 'Sabra' liqueur had not yet been born?
Brandy 'Rishon' was probably one of the stars; Carmel Wineries started distilling brandy already a century ago - and brought the 777 of course, which was the most popular, and also limited editions that won competitions and were stolen by collectors - Brandy 100, Brandy 120 and Brandy 'Rishon'.
Segal's Chartreuse and Marsala , the same that you buy in the sale at MF, were probably sipped by the top statesmen and the Tel Aviv bohemia. The Segal dynasty started producing resin wine about two hundred years ago in Eastern Europe, and in 1925 they moved the distillery to Sharona, with knowledge that spread Back, over seven generations at least.
And how could you not do without the most Israeli drink after tyrosh and hammered wine - Nesher Beer , the malt beer produced in Israel at the Palestine Brewery Ltd., especially for the British garrison that stayed here, according to a Pilsen-style recipe, developed according to the taste of the soldiers .
The Kibbutz HaGolivit, the various immigrants and the influences of the Mediterranean created here a colorful and diverse drinking culture that is unmatched anywhere in the world. Every cocktail we brew at Spicehouse, packs an endless cultural-culinary charge.
The Independence 2022 edition of Spicehouse includes two cocktails with the most Israeli-nostalgic flavors:
WHISKEY & JAFFA ORANGES
Sweet and sour cocktail, alcoholic and rich, combining American Barban whiskey, port wine, Jaffa oranges and Benedictine
GENTLE ARAK & GINGER APPLES
A refreshing and sweet cocktail with refined anise flavors, combining Arak, JJ Whitley gin, homemade anise syrup, extracts of apples and pears and ginger water.
Happy birthday to our country, which is quite mature in mind for its age, but soft and young in body and soul...
Cheers!
